Enjoy reading, traveling, & learning about other cultures. I love everything from football, to concerts, to Broadway plays & musicals. I like being outdoors, but also love the excitement of the cities. My most favorite thing to do is spend time with my husband- my best friend & supporter.

Readjustment Therapist, Veteran Center (MN)

I am not a veteran but I have worked at the Duluth Vet Center since 1984 and have been witness to incredible courage and strength as I listen to veterans from WW11, Korea,Vietnam, Lebanon, Grenada,Desert Storm and OIF/OEF. My hope is that by talking they find a bit of peace and healthier ways to cope with the struggles that will always be there. I am also increasingly aware of how veteran’s pain affects their families, those who love them & their communities. I try to do as much community education and networking as I can.

I can't remember when but I sure remember where and why I first met Thuy. I had seen an article about her and her passion(s) in the Duluth News Tribune and I wrote to ask if she would come to speak at the VetCenter ~ she did and since then she has maintained a wonderful relationship with several vets she met here and me! It has been wonderful to see the good work and the healing that comes from this kind of collaboration."

I am married, have a total of nine kids (bless blended families!) and 15 grand-kids. I am very active in my church - Peace United Church of Christ, I hack at golf, cross stitch, garden, and enjoy reading.

PHD, Psychologist
MACV CORDS operations advisor, Binh Chanh District, 1970.

Briefing officer for DEPCORDS Ambassador Funkhouser to CG & staff, III Corps Vietnam, 1971. In addition to briefing the staff I briefed visiting officials such as the Secretary of the Army. I was in Vietnam for one tour.

After returning from Vietnam I attended the University of Texas at Austin and earned an MA in creative writing, and an M.Ed. and Ph.D. in counseling psychology. In 1981 I went to work for the Vet Center in San Antonio, Texas. After three years I went into private practice, worked in corporate outplacement, worked for nuclear security at a power plant, and taught psychology before returning to the VA. In addition to counseling Vietnam veterans, for many years I also facilitated groups of WWII combat veterans and POWs from WWII, in addition to working with veterans from the Korean War, the Gulf War, and other military actions. I worked with one of the pioneers in the diagnosis and treatment of PTSD for a number of years before becoming a Vet Center team leader. I am retired.

In 2004 I was able to visit Vietnam again. I recently published a novel, A Dream of Heaven, on Kindle under the pen name of Michael FitzGordon. It is available on Kindle and is based on my experiences in Vietnam and as a
psychologist working with combat veterans.

I met Thuy Smith at the Vet Center in Duluth, Minnesota in about 1998, and I was first impressed by her generous and active spirit. The blood of humanity flows through her veins, and she seeks to weave together the many threads of her own background as well as encourage healing and peace internationally. Her effort to integrate and unify her own life as a citizen of the world has naturally evolved into her efforts internationally. I am happy to be of help to TSIO.

County Veterans Service Officer (CVSO)

I worked with veterans for the State of Wisconsin Job Centers in employment related issues for about twelve years. I have been the Veteran’s Service Officer in Chippewa County for the last 10 years.  In this job we work with veterans in getting an assortment of benefits from the Veterans Administration.

I am a member of several Veteran organizations and attend numerous functions related to my job. I have had the great experience of talking with many veterans from World War II to present about their experiences in the military and how it affects them.

I  am very supportive of Thuy and her organization and hope I can have some positive input. She is a big advocate of Vietnam Veterans and works to honor them.
